Reflecting On My Dad

So it never occured to me to actually get out any of my video equipment to record the fantastic stories that my father always told. I never thought while he was sitting at the dinner table, or holding court on the beach, that perhaps this may be the last time I ever heard him tell one of those 10,000 stories he always told. I mean, he was only 69 years old and had just lost a ton of weight and seemed so happy. My family used to joke that all we needed to do was to number the family stories to save the usual guests from the repetition of certain stories ad nauseam. I could just say, “Hey dad, remember…HAHAHA, oh man that was so funny”. And everyone would know what I was talking about and laugh along with me.

Well, we never numbered the stories, and I never got out my gear, and now my dad is gone. He wasn’t old, he didn’t have cancer, he just had some complications that took him away without notice at 69 years old. I had so much time to record him, but always pushed it off. His passing wasn’t the genesis, but it certainly was an accelerator for this company. It made me think not only about the stories I won’t hear, but also that I didn’t have the chance to tell him how I truly felt about him, how he impacted my life, how his example and wisdom permeate every decision I make.

ShineLight Legacy has been birthed just for this reason. Stories are what keep us together, stories make us laugh, cry, get nostalgic, and hope for the future. We need to record these stories and save them while we can. We need our kids, and their kids to know who these great people are who came before them. We need to tell people not only that we love them, but why we love them – and we need to do this today. Jump on board and get in touch with us – let’s have a conversation about someone you want to record, or give the gift of acknowledgement, today.
